February 2004 -- By Jill Gallagher
Well here it is 2004 already, and
the weather around these United States is as diversified as ever. As the
long time Pygora goat breeder knows, trying to figure out when to shear
and when not to shear is a great mystery. You first have to be able to
forecast the weather. Since we would like to make sure our Goats stay
healthy and warm during the weather, but what to do where the weather is
cold, yet that beautiful full fibered Pygora is trying to shed their
coat! Well, life as a rancher, farmer, and goat wrangler was never said
to be easy. If you are looking for the answer to this question on when
to shear, you might want to join the Pygora Yahoo list on the Internet.
That and many other questions are asked and answered daily. There are
new owners, long time owners and those in-between. And as birthing time
nears, there are many discussions on what to do, or what might help. Do
give the group a try. Sign on at Yahoogroups.com or go to the PBA
website at pba-pygora.com and take the link to the yahoo groups.
Why should I be a Pygora Breeders Association Member? Well, good
question. And for one reason, you will get this great newsletter. The
other is that the information in the newsletter is not found just
anywhere. Our breed of goat is a specialty, it is made up of the best
Pygmy and the best Angora and the way we raise it is a combination of
how the Pygmy breeder and the Angora breeder raise theirs, only we do a
little of this and a little of that. Only in the PBA Newsletter can you
find articles that really can work for our special breed. In the
beginning, most books on goats talk about milk goats. And then in the
last 15 years, the Pygmy goat books came out. Not to long after a great
Angora book came out. But nowhere is there a Pygora Book. So for the
latest, up to date information, get the PBA Newsletter, only available,
thru PBA.
And speaking of the Newsletter, we have a new Newsletter Editor. Please
welcome Theresa Esterline. She is following in the footsteps of Susan
Prechtl and Jamie Land, as they retire from this position and again,
thank you ladies for a job well done. Theresa lives in the state of
Michigan and I believe she and her husband are one of our two members in
the state of Michigan. She is very eager to do a wonderful job, and I am
sure she will. And thank you Theresa for stepping up to the plate!
Well we have a great year planned for 2004. At the time of this writing,
we are in the middle of a board meeting and again the board is going
full steam ahead on issues near and dear to you all. From Judges
Training, to By-Laws, and fiber testing. From Education Grants to Youth
activities. And I would like to thank the cc group that also
participates in the meetings, as every idea is valued to make this
Association that much better. Remember if you would like to be on the cc
group, contact me with your e-mail address and we will add you to the
list for the next board meeting as it starts. As the finished product of
our meeting and committees conclude, remember, you get the news first,
right here in your PBA membership Newsletter.
Stay warm; stay dry and get ready… the Kids are coming!!! Ya!
